My name is Karen, I’m a mother, grandmother (of seven), friend, breast cancer ‘thriver’ and I was a participant in a clinical trial for Neratinib at Breast Cancer Research Centre-WA (BCRC-WA). (This drug is now being used to treat certain types of breast cancer.)
In December 2006 at the age of 44, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and since then I have required assistance and support from a range breast cancer professionals. Often the location of these services was in a variety locations and settings, which added another level of complexity to my treatment and the management of my ongoing wellness.
BCRC-WAs ‘one stop shop’ cancer centre, the Perth Breast Cancer Institute (PBCI) opened in June 2020, so this level of complexity no longer exists for women, men, and their families requiring breast cancer services and support.
Thankfully, there is no cancer evident on my body now and I no longer require any cancer related treatments. I have no doubt this fabulous outcome is due to the dedication and tireless work of caring professionals like Professor Arlene Chan and her amazing team.
Since 2018, through the sale of Entertainment Books, I have raised over $6,500 for BCRC-WA to continue their much needed and valuable work and I look forward to raising even more in coming years to support this wonderful organisation.
Your support will directly impact BCRC-WA’s mission to:
- Continue evidence-based treatment ensuring the best possible outcomes and care for breast cancer patients and to achieve higher cure rates and longer survival rates.
- Enhance the multi-disciplinary care provided by the Perth Breast Cancer Institute (PBCI) for individuals with breast cancer and their partners, carers and children by providing greater support and improving quality of life.
- Provide education opportunities, resources and information about breast cancer.
